Summer 2016

In this course we will examine the relationship between gender and work.  Gender debates are some of the most social and political issues today.  We live in a society that has strong and divided feelings about gender, sex, and sexualities and these discussions are increasingly becoming part of our personal and professional lives.

This course is divided into three sections.  In Section I: How Does Gender Work, we will revisit the social construction of gender.  We will review how we learn to be gendered beings and the relationship between sex, gender, and sexualities.  In Section II: Gender AS Work, we will look at the ways in which gender in itself is work - via our individual doing, acting, behaving, role-laying, and bodily enactments of gender.  Finally, in Section III: Contemporary Gender/Work Debates, we will examine current contentious gender issues, public policy and how these issues play out in the work arena?
