TEACHING PHILOSOPHY

Students enter the sociological classroom with a diversity of agendas.  While many of my students continue to explore the discipline, others move along alternative paths in some cases only spending one semester in a sociological classroom.  The challenge for me as an instructor is not only to expose students to the predominant thought and discourse within an area of study, but also to provide them with a set of tools applicable to their lives outside the confines of the classroom.

I believe the sociological classroom is well suited to provide each student with a set of transferable skills to further their academic and professional goals.  Towards this end, I stress critical thinking, analytical writing, and active participation in each of my courses through an exploration of social life.  Thus, I strive inform and influence my students both sociologically and as human beings by developing transferable skills while engaging social justice, stressing service/activism, and building leaders through mentoring.
